XC

For the last month or so, every Tuesday and Thursday Gimme has stayed after school for cross country practice.  This is her first year participating.  The fact that she got a new t-shirt was the final selling point.

Today was the big race.  She and her little friends gathered at the starting line, and Gimme totally jumped out of her skin when the gun fired.  It kinda threw her off a bit, so she was slow to start, but she finished in the middle of the pack (about 25-30 girls total).  I was so proud of her!

After she crossed the finish line, I gave her a big hug and was praising her etc. and she just said, “Mom.  I’m not doing this next year.”

Apparently the t-shirt wasn’t cool enough to trump the freezing cold weather, the wet soggy grass she had to run on, or the 1/2 mile she had to endure.

Now I’ve got to figure out how I’m going to get her to play basketball.  The whole “new t-shirt” strategy isn’t going to work like I had planned, so I ‘m looking for suggestions—she will play.

I don't blame her!! I never saw the appeal of cross-country. I think basketball will be an easier sell. Just think, it's indoors, and there's a "purpose" to all that running. :)
